The inaugural Houston Oyster & SeaFest was held on Saturday, June 4th at Buffalo Bayou Park featuring signature oyster and seafood dishes from many of Houston’s finest restaurants and bars, as well as live music and educational exhibits.
The Avera Companies was a sponsor for the event, which introduced Houstonians to Galveston Bay Foundation’s Oyster Shell Recycling Program.
The Oyster Shell Recycling Program promotes a sustainable Eastern oyster population by partnering with Houston restaurants to return shucked oyster shells back to Galveston Bay to restore native oyster habitat.
Managing this program since 2011, the Galveston Bay Foundation has collected over 1,200 tons (2.4 million pounds) of oyster shells to date. More than half of these recycled shells have been incorporated in oyster reef restoration projects, and the remaining shells will be returned to the bay in the next three to five years.
